Procedure  for Renaming or Name Change


(Decree 999 of 1988. By which competition for corrections of civil status registration states, the name change is authorized notary public and other provisions.)


This same decree allows Colombians to change its name and continue its life under a new identity.


- Grant deed is required

- The notice supersedes the previous record

- Create and entered data into a new record.


The name change or modification can be:

- Name change

- Deleting a first or second name

- Addition of name

- Change of name


Name changes do not change the family affiliation doeth remains son and brother who are his family.


- It can be done once in life.

- Whoever does that is responsible for obtaining and change all identity documents such as identity card, pass and ID cards, under the new name



In accordance with Decree 1555 of 1989 Article 1 amending Article 7 of Decree 999 of 1988 these writings of corrections in the civil registry and the name change must be made before the notary where is the original inscription, and only in the if the enrollee has a home at the present time you can do so in different notary.


Requirements for granting this writing:


- A photocopy of the certificate of citizenship of respondent


- A certified copy of the birth certificate.


Note: If the enrollee is a minor must appear parents and legal guardians to grant the public deed; for minors in these cases, the same law reserves them the right to a new change when they grow old.
